‘Histories’ is a three-part exhibition drawn from the Serralves Collection, highlighting the importance of narrative in recent art making. Marking the 15th anniversary of the opening of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, the exhibition invites fresh thinking around art collecting and contemporary art in the twenty-first century. The exhibition includes over 60 works in painting, sculpture, film and video installation, photography and performance, many recently acquired, together with a selection of works by artists planned for the Collection.
Presented over the summer of 2014 in the Serralves Museum, Villa and Park, ‘Histories’ proposes three inter-related moments, in which visitors are invited to consider new trajectories in art across time and space.

The inaugural exhibition of the Serralves Museum, ‘Circa 1968’, highlighted a critical decade in art making, one that marked the beginning of post-modernist thinking centred around questions of concept and expanded forms. ‘Histories’ reflects on more recent approaches in contemporary art in which concept and form are in the service of narratives of history and culture, identity and representation, truth and fiction. Staged visual narratives shift between real-life accounts and fictional tales, personal stories merge with current events, and the blurring of historical facts with supposition and hearsay assume the form of archives that propose a meditation on time and memory.
Recent works in the exhibition appropriate histories of aesthetic form, from archaic symbolism to Enlightenment positivism and modernist rationalism, to articulate questions of value and authenticity. Others suggest a performing of culture in which abstraction becomes a carrier for ideological conditioning and reinterpretation.
