Robert Frank e Alfred Leslie, Pull My Daisy, 1959, 30 min.Adapting the third act of the unfinished stage play, Beat Generation, by Jack Kerouac, Pull My Daisy is a precious document about the libertarian and beat counterculture movement, which marked American literature in the 1950s, including participation of some of the key figures from this underground movement. The film questions some of the main assumptions underpinning the beat aesthetics and thinks about the boundaries between spontaneity, improvisation and written planning.
Alberto Seixas Santos, Brandos Costumes, 1975, 75 min.Directed between 1972 and 1973, although it had its first public projection in September 1975. Brandos Costumes by Alberto Seixas Santos is a barometer of the contradictions that marked Portugal’s 1974 revolution. Between a father’s appeal to death and the daily life of a petty bourgeois family in Lisbon, the film is an ironic synthesis of the different political sensitivities that marked the history of 20th century Portugal.
