Third film session of the film programme Jean-Luc Godard, dedicated to the Godard-Miéville collaboration. The session will feature six short-films (one by Godard, four by Miéville and a last one directed by both), Godard's "An All-Round Maid" (1981), Miéville's "Couple Représenté en Mars et Vénus" (1990), "Ce que je n'ai pas su te dire" (2008), "Dans le temps" (2008) and "Souvenir d'utopie" (2006), and Godard and Miéville's "Reportage Amateur (Maquette Expo)" (2006).

UNE BONNE À TOUT FAIRE | AN ALL-ROUND MAID

Shot in Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope studios while he was filming One from the Heart (1982), Jean-Luc Godard makes use of its American auteur's space and technical means to stage a small film-within-the-film, which dialogues directly with his latter Passion (1982). With Vittorio Storaro at the helm of a camera in crane motion, Godard stages and films a tableau vivant of a painting by Georges de La Tour, crossing it with political readings in which Andrei Konchalovsky, the Russian filmmaker who is an actor here, reads passages that mix Cézanne and Marx. This gesture of staging and of mise-en-abyme anticipates what Godard will do later in Passion.

COUPLE REPRÉSENTÉ EN MARS ET VÉNUS

This short-film was commissioned a propos the presentation of the sculpture Imperial Group on Mars and Venus, on display in the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities at the Louvre Museum. Directed by Anne-Marie Miéville, the film treatment of the statue is also an opportunity to explore the idea of the ‘couple’, which will also permeate Miéville's other short films.

CE QUE JE N’AI PAS SU TE DIRE

Part of the Voyage(s) en utopie exhibition, which also included an invitation for Godard to make seven films, three of which were eventually directed by Anne-Marie Miéville. Ce que je n'ai pas su te dire is one of these three cases, a curious object consisting of a very slow camera movement and zoom out on a woman's face, accompanied on the soundtrack by a version of Ne me quitte pas.

DANS LE TEMPS

Dans le temps consists essentially of shots of cats asleep or playing in the light. The film is situated between Maya Deren and Alexandre Hammid's famous short-film The Private Life of a Cat (1944) and the contemporary explosions of cats on the internet, as we would later find at the beginning of Film Socialisme (2010).

SOUVENIR D’UTOPIE

Anne-Marie Miéville's third and final short-film for the exhibition Voyage(s) en utopie, whose title (Souvenir d'utopie) rhymes directly with the previous one, is an exploration on utopia and its place in human life. Through a narrative that is both personal and political, a meditation on the loss of ideals and the transformation of society, combining personal memories with broader reflections on the concept of utopia.

The only film officially signed by Godard and Miéville resulting from the exhibition Voyage(s) en utopie is presented as a guided tour (in the voice of Godard himself) through a humble cardboard model filmed by Anne-Marie Miéville, which was to serve as supporting material for an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou. A rare and seldom-seen film, it is a privileged moment that suggests unexpected links between cinema, painting, literature and exhibitions.
