A DAY AT THE RACES

Sam Wood | USA | 1937 | 111’

The seventh film by the Marx Brothers, and the second under the MGM banner, A Day at the Races came out of a wave of great popularity and success for this family of comedians. The plot, although chaotic and typical of the brothers' adventures - in this movie, Groucho, Harpo and Chico are a trio – doesn't have the flair of their Paramount period, although it still retains the same absurd tone. From the bet on a horse race, through which they manage to save the farm of Judy, its hypochondriac owner, to her treatment by Groucho Marx, here a veterinarian posing as a doctor, these and other adventures in A Day at the Races are staged in a sober, counterpoint-style by the direction of Hollywood veteran Sam Wood.
