Marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Arnold Schönberg (Vienna, 13. September. 1874 - Los Angeles, 13. July. 1951) - a major figure whose thinking irreversibly marked the musical production of subsequent generations - ars ad hoc begins the 2024/25 season with a performance of one of his most emblematic works. With the creation of Pierrot Lunaire op. 21 [1912], for voice and instrumental quintet, Schönberg established not only the sprechgesang, but also a formation, since then called the ‘pierrot quintet’, whose literature will continue to grow to this day. Based on a challenge from the actress Albertine Zehme, the three ensembles of seven melodramas make use of the German translation of Albert Giraud's work of the same name, experimenting with the different timbral combinations available and sophisticated counterpoint to maximise diversity with the greatest economy of means.
Opening the concert is the trio Is the timer set? [2024], which Arte no Tempo commissioned from Solange Azevedo (Póvoa de Varzim, 1995) earlier this year and which evokes the relationship between time and the way we perceive it in different contexts.
