Originally commissioned by the Cannes Film Festival to make a short film commemorating the entry of cinema into its second full century, Godard instead presents a barrage of aural bombardment of archival images of war and Nazi atrocities, provocatively interspersed with shards of images from films as disparate as Vincente Minnelli's Gigi (1958) or his own Breathless (1960).

Short-film from the omnibus feature-length Ten Minutes Older: The Cello (2002). Over the course of an impressive ten minutes, Godard compresses the aesthetic and ethical lessons of the History(s) of Cinema into a reflection on the political situation at the turn of the millennium, calling upon all the horrors of the world, under the sign of its last moments: of youth, of fame, of memory, of silence, of history, or of eternity. The film is, as the Cinémathèque Française describes it, a “crepuscular evocation of the last minutes of… thought, love and cinema”.

The idea is simple

The man and woman meet again

The dog finds itself between them

The other is in one,

the one is in the other

and they are three

The former husband shatters everything

A second film begins:

the same as the first,

and yet not

From the human race we pass to metaphor

This ends in barking

and a baby’s cries

In the meantime, we will have seen people talking of the demise of the dollar, of truth in mathematics and of the death of a robin.

3DÉSASTRES | THE THREE DISASTERS

The Three Disasters is Jean-Luc Godard's contribution to the Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture commission film, a part of the omnibus feature-leght 3x3D, along with two other short-films by Peter Greenaway and Edgar Pêra. The film is a video-essay based on the collision of various archival materials, refocusing its attention on the intersection between the history of cinema and the political history of the 20th century. The film is equally important as a test tool for 3D technology, which Godard and director of photography Fabrice Aragno would take to new extremes of cognitive dissonance in Adieu au Langage.
