The second programme of the 2024/25 season of ars ad hoc ensemble in Serralves proposes listening to a new generation of Portuguese composers that Arte no Tempo has been following.

At the age of twenty-five, Mariana Vieira (1997) wrote her first string quartet, an unpretentious work centred on the exploration of historically neutral elements, which ars ad hoc premiered at the Évora Contemporary Music Festival in 2023. In 2024, Pedro Berardinelli (1985) and Luís Salgueiro (1993) completed a quintet and a septet respectively, which will now be performed for the first time. The three works have in common the fact that they are the first that each of the composers wrote for ars ad hoc, all of them the result of commissions or co-commissions from Arte no Tempo.

A little less recent is Pathos of distance, the second of the three string quartets that Italian-Swiss composer Oscar Bianchi (b. 1975) has written to date, premiered by Jack Quartet at the 2017 Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik. Seemingly detached from the weight of tradition, Pathos of distance expands the timbral palette of rubbed string instruments by equipping each musician with a waldteufel.
