The second instalment in the trilogy that follows the saga of the Leguineche family, National Heritage takes place after the death of General Franco, when the family leaves their estate in Los Tejadillos, where they have remained for decades in voluntary exile. Having achieved their goal of returning to Madrid, the Leguineche's attend the social events of the aristocracy and get closer to the monarchic circles. The old marquis is obsessed with social advancement and the desire to recover his long-lost pompous life. To do so, he takes up residence in the old palace he owns in the centre of the capital, but not before having to overcome the difficulties posed by his wife, who deeply despises both him and his son. To regain control of the situation, the Marquis de Leguineche tries to neutralise his wife by attributing an incurable mental illness to her, while at the same time renovating the palace to adapt it to the demands of aristocratic life.
