“Pautas” is a set of 20 graphic works by Silvestre Pestana, from 1975, and belonging to the Serralves collection. They are marked by geometric and colorful systems and are also a product and symbol of the utopian side of a generation enveloped in a bubble of desire anchored in the revolution of April 25, 1974 and its promises of social construction based on peace, freedom, democracy and progress.
In “Pautas (2024)”, the multidisciplinary collective SuperNova Ensemble joins Pestana to revisit this set of works, approaching it as a testimony and celebration of the Revolution, as a synthesis of a plan of action and artistic research graphically established in the relationships between signs and in a logic of visual reading and programming, as well as a possible starting point for thinking about the place of the revolution today and how it can be projected tomorrow.
The ""Pautas"" are reorganized here through the exploration of their spatial, luminic, acoustic, musical and virtual dimensions. Between sound and moving image, between memory and the present, between the human and Artificial Intelligence, the imaginary of its construction systems is thus expanded in its concreteness, challenged by friction, illuminated by processes of sharing.

Born in Funchal, Silvestre Pestana (1949-) is one of the most radical figures in Portuguese contemporary art. Poet, visual artist and performer, since the late 1960s he has created a unique body of work across a wide range of disciplines.
Pestana has a bachelor's degree in Graphic Arts and Design from ESBAP, a master's degree in Art and Design Teaching from De Montford University. He was a professor at the Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Coimbra. He studied Television and Electronic Music at Stockholm University. His work stands out due to the radicality of the interventions that, from the outset, are based on an intentional hybridism resulting from the game and permutation between linguistic and non-linguistic signs. The contamination that, in the 1960s and 70s, derived from the use of different graphic material, would find, in the 80s, support in the use of video and computer media. At this level, it can be said that his computer poetry opened new directions for experimental poetry. Frequently and intentionally mixing issues related to materiality and mediation, in his work procedures based on digital systems appear mixed with analogue representation. His recent works, in the field of performance, in real or virtual spaces such as Second Life, are fundamental for assessing the way in which experimentalist practices interfere with the social practices in which they are articulated.
The exhibition “Silvestre Pestana: Tecnoforma” in Serralves was the first major museum exhibition dedicated to the work of Silvestre Pestana. The following year he presented “Breathless” at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Santa Barbara in partnership with the space Uma Certa Falta de Coerência and, recently, he participated in the Portuguese Experimental Poetry exhibition at CAIXA Cultural Brasília, Brazil.
Silvestre Pestana was awarded the Portuguese AICA Award in 2019.
