In the third and final part of the Leguineche family trilogy, the story begins on 23 February 1981, in the midst of the coup d'état. In the meantime, the Marquis de Leguineche has been forced to sell his palace at a bargain price and is now living in a flat with his son Luis José, divorced from his wife Chus. Accompanying them are Segundo and Viti, his usual servants, and Father Calvo. Luis José and Segundo plan to register a patent for ‘Platoespaña’, a scheme of trays of local products to be profitably distributed during the 1982 World Cup. But the unexpected news of Chus's father's death forces the whole family to travel to Extremadura to attend the funeral and, with luck, perhaps steal a share of the inheritance. The desperate attempts to survive of a decadent aristocracy with no chance of redemption are, for Berlanga, a pretext for caricaturing the ambitions of other social groups that were beginning to assert themselves in Spain at the time.
