The Museum as Performance
Acesso: Bilhete Museu
10:00 - 20:00
And everything changed…hopefully not to stay the same. The tide of uncertainty did not prevent us from throwing the anchor that marks the second weekend of September every year: The Museum as Performance. With its 6th edition, the event reiterates its structural importance in the programming of the Serralves Museum. The rules of social distancing cannot prevent the presentation of projects that depend on our presence in a certain space, at a specific time.
During the course of two days, Serralves questions the place of performance within the Museum. But we also question ourselves about our own place, calling on artists and works that offer a web of encounters and disciplinary intersections such as performance, dance, music, installation, drawing, sculpture and cinema.
The artists participating in this new edition are Máiréad Delaney, José Alberto Gomes/João Dias, David Helbich, Vanda Madureira, Sara Manente com Christophe Albertijn, Ondine Cloez e Michiel Reynaert, Dori Nigro & Paulo Pinto, Ula Sickle, Gustavo Sumpta, André Uerba, Sara Vaz & Marco Balesteros.
The Museum as Performance is made possible by the Morgan Phoa Family.

Levantar o Mundo [Moving the world]
The point of departure is Archimedes’ phrase ‘Give me whereon to stand and I will move the world’. The Greek mathematician, engineer, physician, inventor and astronomer, considered as one of the main scientists of Classic Antiquity, was also the author of a law that is crucial for modern engineering: ‘The Law of Archimedes’ Lever’, in which Fe (Force of the effort) x Eb (Effort bar) = Fr (Resistance force) x Rb (Resistance bar).
Basing itself on this law, the performance consists of a closed-circuit action in which the artists balances himself on top of a tube bar that stands on an enormous tyre. The balance is achieved because the weight of the artist causes the steel structure to oscillate, which demonstrate that the performer and the apparatus are but one and the same body. Levantar o Mundo [Moving the World] is divided into five moments or positions. First position: Entry. Second position: unstable equilibrium. Third position: horizontality of the structure. Fourth position: preparation to exit. Fifth position: exit. In the end, the performer repeats the five moments.
