During the Spanish Golden Century, Doña Prouhèze, the wife of a nobleman, is deeply in love with Don Rodrigo. But he is forced to leave Spain a go to the Americas - where he shall be viceroy - and the king imposes the regency of the African citadel of Mogador to Doña Prouhèze. She in turn sends a letter to Don Rodrigo, but he is only able to read it ten years later. Leaving the New Continent behind, Don Rodrigo arrives at Mogador, where he might have reunited with Prouhèze, who ends up dying enclosed in a fortress. Ten years later, a mutilated Rodrigo gets to know Sept-Epées, Prouhèze's daughter.
