Second session of the film and talk programme O Saber do Cinema [The Knowledge of Cinema], programmed and moderated by Regina Guimarães and Saguenail.
In this third instalment of the spectator school O Saber do Cinema [The Knowledge of Cinema], there will be, as in the previous ones, five fortnightly sessions (between 10 May and 5 July), this time dedicated to revisiting stories from history. The gestures of returning to characters and events from the past that we intend to share and discuss with the audience sometimes reveal unknown aspects of these figures and/or facts, either confronting their protagonists with experiences that have been swept under the rug, or re-establishing the nature of the events more accurately, or even situating them more precisely in the context in which they take place. The fabric of the distant past is full of holes, the more recent past has been camouflaged, distorted and concealed. Hand in hand with the filmmakers, the audience will share their modes of enquiry and investigation, experiencing, through film narratives, the need to interrogate the supposed transparencies and opacities of reality. The questioning of the category “documentary cinema” will also be at the center of our issues.
The screenings will be preceded by a short preamble and followed by a discussion that is intended to be fertile and participatory. At each screening, a handout with an original text will be distributed.
In line with the objectives of the Serralves Museum's Educational Service, this selection of films, by Regina Guimarães and Saguenail, aims to destabilize preconceived ideas about filmic forms and the themes that cinema has been tackling.
