LISBOA CULTURAL

Manoel de Oliveira | 1983 | 61’

Manoel de Oliveira directed this documentary for the TV series "Cultural Capitals of Europe", in an Italian-Portuguese coproduction, articulated between RTP and RAI network channels. By delving into the Portuguese capital's past, the film traces a series of historical and cultural affinities, allowing it to serve as a form of reflection. "Lisbon interested me as the center of several intersections, of fluxes and refluxes, of passages from other cultures and a place of conquest by a force that came from the North. (...) I thought it would be interested to set a series of stages and, through them and also through an historical time, to suggest the Portuguese cultural movement, albeit in a succint way" (Manoel de Oliveira).  

NICE, À PROPOS DE JEAN VIGO

Similar to the case of "Lisboa Cultural", "Nice, à Propos de Jean Vigo" was also a film made to a series. Title "Régards sur la France", it portrayed several places of the French territory. The INA - Institut national de l'audiovisuel invited Manoel de Oliveira, and he chose Nice, whose artistic and personal affinities are indisputable. His son Manuel Casimiro was, at the time, living there, and Nice is forever linked to Jean Vigo, a filmmaker to whom Manoel de Oliveira always had a great admiration. Vigo had also dedicated one of his films to this French southern coastal city.
