Nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Plácido is one of Luis García Berlanga's most acidic works, developed in collaboration with screenwriter Rafael Azcona, responsible for some of the most extravagant proposals by filmmakers such as Marco Ferreri or Carlos Saura. In this caustic portrait of Francoist society, its regime and the institutionalization of a state Christianity, Plácido denounces hypocrisy, false charity and the cult of appearances. The film focuses on a night when the protagonist Placido is forced to take part in a Christmas parade on his unpaid-for, three-wheeled scooter, having miraculously escaped censorship because it was received at the time as a “harmless choral comedy”."
