João Gomes da Silva is one of the most relevant contemporary landscape architects, having been awarded the Schinkel Prize, the Valmor Prize and the FAD Award, among others, for his projects at Expo’98, with Manuel Salgado, and the Salt Marsh Complex, with Paulo David. Since 1985, he has collaborated with Álvaro Siza at the Malagueira Estate, in Évora, where they have worked on the three great tectonic elements of landscape: soil, water and vegetation.
Between 1996 and 1999, they have also rethought the surroundings of the Serralves Museum, stitching together moments of integration and contrast with the romantic park and the gardens of Jacques Grébèr. Just like Adam and Eve, both represented at the Serralves Villa, the most recent Álvaro Siza Wing also seems to have eaten from the Tree of Knowledge and discovered its Naked Architecture. It hence dresses itself in fine foliage, in branches, petals and animal life, configuring a unique space in its complexity and sophistication.
João Gomes da Silva’s tour, at 3 PM, will be followed by the launch of his book “The Order of Landscape”, at 5 PM, in the Álvaro Siza Wing. The Naked Architecture programming, tours and talks, will continue to take place throughout 2023, until the opening of the Collection Exhibitions in the beginning of 2024.
