Taking as its starting point the unique relationship between the history and production of Port Wine and the territories through which the River Douro flows, the exhibition Wind Lines. Artistic Paths in Nature accompanies the visiting route to Caves Ferreira, presenting a series of works by Portuguese and international artists which reshape our bond to the natural environment in light of different perspectives and multiple dimensions, whether through the shape of a pebble, the course of a stream, the walking trail or the movement of the planet.
Wind lines has its origin in the important series of works produced by artists associated with the land art or earthworks movement who, since the late 1960s, have used nature as the starting point for creating works conceived outside the studio and away from the traditional exhibition spaces. Such artists have made recurrent use of natural raw materials, transporting their own artistic experiences to the exhibition space. This exhibition is centred around a large installation by one of the most important international figures associated with this movement, Richard Long, presented in the form of a dialogue with works by Portuguese artists from different generations, whose practices highlight different approaches to this theme, which today enjoys a special relevance.
This initiative, curated by Joana Valsassina, is part of the Serralves Collection Touring Exhibition Programme, which aims to make the Foundation’s collection accessible to different audiences across the country.
