Where is Cuckoo Land?"brings together a group of works by Priscila Fernandes (Coimbra, Portugal, 1981) belonging to the Serralves Collection and the artist’s own collection, which reveal different approaches to one of the central themes in her practice: the dialectical relationship between work and leisure. Conceived specifically for the Lagos Cultural Centre, the exhibition promotes a reflection about issues that are largely related with the current and historical context of the city, region and country.

With a background in painting, Priscila Fernandes has been developing a multidisciplinary work since 2006 that also includes video, performance, installation, photography and publications, stemming from in-depth research into the practices and utopias that have appeared over the course of history associated with work and free time, education and entertainment, artistic creation and contemplation, freedom and well-being. Her artistic approach combines historical research, theoretical investigation and critical reflection with a playful attitude that embraces free association, creative speculation, storytelling and fiction.

The exhibition presents works that were conceived during the last decade and is developed around a large installation that occupies the gallery’s widest area; and includes also a sound piece, presented in the courtyard, a selection of the artist’s publications available for consultation and a new installation showcasing the research work that has informed several of her projects since 2016.

This exhibition, curated by Joana Valsassina, is part of the Serralves Collection Touring Exhibitions Programme, which aims to make the Foundation’s collection accessible to different audiences across the country.
