Paula Rego: The Cry of Imagination brings together a selection of prints, paintings, and drawings by Paula Rego drawn from the important group of works by the artist held in the Serralves Collection. Be it in extravagant compositions full of humour and irony, or in dense, carefully crafted pictorial narratives, Paula Rego explores topics such as power and obedience, physical and psychological pain, shame and pride, violence, loneliness, and sociability.
Throughout her oeuvre, namely in its figurative dimension, Paula Rego reaffirms her ever-renewed capacity to discuss the role of women in contemporary societies, to question everyday life, and, first and foremost, to unveil universes in which surprise and amazement are anchored in the most basic and fundamental yearnings of human beings.
This exhibition is part of the Serralves Collection Touring Exhibitions Programme, which aims to make the Foundation’s collection accessible to different audiences across the country.
