Jorge
Pinheiro (Coimbra, 1931) is a central figure in the Portuguese artistic context
from the second half of the 20th century, integrating, in 1968, the famous “Os
4 vintes” [“The 4 twenties”] group, alongside Ângelo de Sousa (Maputo, 1938 –
Porto, 2011), Armando Alves (Estremoz, 1935) and José Rodrigues (Luanda, 1936 –
Porto, 2016). In a career spanning more than five decades, Jorge Pinheiro has
developed a work of profound theoretical and intellectual coherence translated
into a visually diverse body of work in which figurative painting and concrete
and conceptual abstraction coexist. This exhibition includes a large sculpture
and series of paintings and works on paper that highlight the artist’s
investigations into musical arrangements, chromatic combinations and geometric
formulations.
