Serralves Park spans 18 hectares and is constituted by a wide variety of magnificent, harmoniously interconnected spaces: formal gardens, woodlands, and a traditional farm. Designed by the architect Jacques Greber in the 1930s, it constitutes a singular reference within Portugal’s landscape heritage.
A visit to the Park, via any of its circuits, involving different routes and durations, is a privileged opportunity to come into contact with nature and appreciate the wide diversity of trees and shrubs, constituted by roughly 200 species and a variety of autochthonous and ornamental exotic plants. In addition, the gardens and the park also constitute a museum setting: visitors to the park will encounter sculptures from the Serralves Collection that are permanently on display.
THE GARDENERS’ HOUSE is a project signed by Architect Álvaro Siza, in the Serralves Park.⠀
The former machinery warehouse has been restored and transformed in Álvaro Siza’s signature style into a multi-purpose building that supports Serralves’ gardening area and other functions. Occupying an area of 18 hectares, Serralves Park is a fundamental part of the ecological framework of the city of Porto. To maintain this magnificent space, Serralves relies on an in-house team of gardeners who undertake meticulous daily work that is vital to the preservation of this historic landscape heritage.
The Gardeners’ House will also assume an educational role. In keeping with the Serralves Foundation’s mission to stimulate interest and knowledge among audiences of diverse backgrounds and ages in Landscape and Environment – as well as in critical issues for society and its future – various educational initiatives will be organised. These will include visits to the space and the opportunity to observe the tools and vehicles essential to the gardening and agricultural work carried out in Serralves Park. The new structure has been christened “Gardeners’ House” in honour of the Serralves gardening team, which daily cares for and preserves this extraordinary historic park.
